The notes say this view was made especially for the National Cash Register Company, the Dayton, Ohio, firm that sold its machines to shopkeepers around the world and used photographs like this to show them in everyday commercial use. The Detroit Publishing Company made the 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1895 and 1910, when European cafés and bars were modernizing their counters and accounting. The picture is worth a closer look for its staging: an American commercial product placed in a Paris setting, meant to persuade buyers far from the factory.
