The record names only "Lynn Gilchrist," a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the company's own label is unverified, so the sitter's identity is unconfirmed. The negative is a 4 by 5 inch glass plate dated to about 1926, a period when the company, a commercial studio in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits and street scenes. Glass negatives of this kind often show streaks and blemishes as their light-sensitive coatings break down over time, and the marks visible here reflect that aging. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
