Shown seated and facing the camera at three-quarter length, Major General Winfield Scott Hancock wears a Union officer's uniform in this portrait by Campbell Photo Service of Washington, made sometime between 1861 and 1865. Hancock commanded the Union II Corps and is best remembered for holding the center of the line at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, the day of Pickett's Charge, where he was wounded. Studio portraits like this one circulated widely during the war, letting the public put faces to the commanders. Hancock later became the Democratic nominee for president in 1880.
