Published as a two-page spread in *Harper's Weekly* on August 1, 1863, this wood engraving by Theodore R. Davis shows the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The city fell to Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863, after a siege that began in May had left its Confederate garrison cut off and short of food. Davis was an artist attached to the Union army who sent sketches from the front, and his work helped readers in the North follow the campaign that gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.
