Rather than a portrait or a ceremony, this picture centers on a single stone, titled "The mythic stone," among the Hidatsa of North Dakota along the Missouri River. Edward S. Curtis made it around 1908 for *The North American Indian*, his multivolume survey published in installments from 1907 to 1930, and it appeared in one of the supplement volumes. Many Plains peoples regarded boulders like this as places of spiritual power, and Curtis's staging and framing show as much about his own vision of "vanishing" traditions as about everyday life on the reservation.
