A carved stone in Cuzco, Peru, gives this photograph its subject. The record identifies it as a punishment stone, a feature linked in local tradition and popular accounts to the Inca period, when the city was the capital of their empire. Cuzco's Inca masonry was later built over and around by Spanish colonizers after 1533, so such stones often sit amid colonial walls and streets. Photographers working in the 1940s frequently documented these remains as evidence of pre-Columbian craftsmanship. The attribution of the stone's use to punishment rests mainly on tradition, so historians treat it with some caution.
