Rather than a single scene, this item is a printed list of the views John C. H. Grabill offered to buyers, the kind of sales catalog a western studio used to advertise its stock. Grabill worked in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory, where he photographed mining camps, the town of Deadwood, and the people who lived there during the boom years of the 1870s and 1880s. Photographers of that era sold their work as individual cabinet cards and stereo views, so a catalog like this one shows how a frontier studio marketed its images to customers far from the places pictured. It is a useful record of the photography trade in the West during the 1880s.
