Here a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, Rollin Kirby, takes aim at Senator Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin, who is shown receiving an Iron Cross, the German military decoration, as the "only adequate reward" for his conduct. The cartoon ran in *The World*, a New York newspaper, in 1917, when the United States was debating entry into World War I. La Follette was a leading opponent of the war, and in early 1917 he was among the senators who blocked President Wilson's bill to arm American merchant ships. Kirby's drawing reflects how sharply such opposition was attacked as disloyal during the war.
