Lithographer H. Bucholzer's view of the July 1844 disturbances in Philadelphia's Kensington and Southwark districts shows street violence that erupted between nativist Protestant crowds and Irish Catholic residents. Churches and homes were attacked over several days before militia units were called out to restore order. Bucholzer was one of the main artists working for the New York publisher James Baillie in 1844. The title first gave the date as June, but a later reprint corrects it to July 7, and that reissue was also issued by J. Sowle in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which shows how widely such images circulated.
