A rider on skis is pulled along behind a horse in this Swiss scene, a pairing that reflects skijoring, the winter sport of being towed over snow by a horse or other animal. The practice grew popular in the Alpine resorts in the early 1900s, when winter tourism was expanding in Switzerland. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption information, so the exact place and year remain uncertain.
