The sitter is the German Crown Prince, Wilhelm, eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II, posed with a horse in a pairing that matched his public image as a cavalry officer. The George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds this glass negative, came from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied news and portrait pictures in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption cards, so the exact occasion is unknown. Horsemanship carried heavy weight in the Prussian officer corps, which makes the picture a useful glimpse of how the imperial family wished to be seen.
