This 1900 color lithograph advertises Andrew Mack, the singing comedian, in *The Rebel*, a drama of the Irish rebellion by James B. Fagen, presented under the management of Rich & Harris. Mack built his reputation on Irish ballads and sentimental roles, and Irish-themed melodrama with songs was a staple of American theaters at the turn of the century, drawing audiences with both nationalist feeling and music. The poster was produced by the Strobridge Litho Co. of Cincinnati and New York, one of the leading American firms for theatrical advertising of that era. Its bold lettering and large portrait show how such posters sold a star's personality as much as the plot.
