Anna Robeson Lea Baker sits three-quarter length at a table, one arm resting on it and one hand gloved, a detail that gives the pose a formal, deliberate air. The case around the plate is decorated with flowers and ribbons framed in an oval, typical of the presentation cases sold with mid-1840s daguerreotypes. The record notes that the plate may be the work of William and Frederick Langenheim, Philadelphia photographers active in that decade. Daguerreotypes like this one were positive images on polished silver, so they reflect light differently depending on the angle at which they are held.
