Pairing Bethlehem with the Valley of Jehoshaphat in one wide sweep gives this print its particular character. It was issued in Paris in 1856 as one plate in volume three of Auguste Salzmann's *Jérusalem*, a survey of the city's monuments from the Jewish period to the photographer's own day. Salzmann worked in the region in the mid-1850s, and his albumen prints were among the most ambitious photographic records of the Holy Land of their time. Notice how the albumen surface renders the open terrain and the built edges of the town, the kind of detail that let armchair readers in Paris see places they would never visit.
