Provincetown sits at the tip of Cape Cod, and this view from Long Point looks back across the harbor toward the town's low houses and waterfront. Long Point, a sandy spit at the western end of the harbor, was long a rough outpost of fishermen and later artists, and the setting shows how the town's life was tied to the water. Pictures taken from this point often capture the contrast between the open Atlantic and the sheltered anchorage that made Provincetown a busy fishing port in the nineteenth century. Notice how little of the built town is visible beyond the shoreline, which keeps attention on the land and sea that shaped it.
