The title is given in German, French, and English, a reminder that Niagara Falls drew European travelers and armchair readers long before it became a mass tourist destination. This engraving reproduces a painting by Carl Bodmer, the Swiss-born artist who traveled across North America in 1832 and 1834 with Prince Maximilian of Wied, and it also draws on a drawing by an artist named Bougeard. Engravings like this carried images of the falls to readers who would never see them in person, and they helped shape how the public pictured the cataract's scale and power.
