Four named hikers, Mrs. Mabel Ackerman, Carrie Van Gaasbeck, W.A. Clarkson and A.A. Berger, are the focus of this glass negative, which the record dates to December 30, 1913. The title places the group in Los Angeles but also carries an "N.Y." tag, and the record notes that its details are unverified, so the setting is best held loosely. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and the 5 by 7 inch plate size was typical of its working files. Winter outings like this one reflect the popularity of walking and hiking as leisure pursuits among city dwellers of the period.
