A fleet putting out from Los Angeles for Hawaii is the subject of this glass negative, one of many made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold pictures of current events to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified notes, so the exact voyage remains uncertain. The subject fits a period when the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet used the harbor at San Pedro, the port serving Los Angeles, and sent warships across the ocean to Hawaii. The picture is a useful record of the city's close ties to its waterfront.
