This glass negative is titled "Taft at Los Angeles," placing William Howard Taft, president from 1909 to 1913, in the city. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, and that information has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Presidents of that era often made long rail tours and stopped in major western cities to speak and greet crowds, and Bain's agency, based in New York, sold such pictures to newspapers that wanted images of national figures. Its glass plates are valued today as a record of how press photography covered public life in the early 1900s.
