Bananas grow in dense, leafy stands in this 1917 view of Cuba, and the photograph's own title does most of the describing: it is a study of the crop rather than of a town or a person. Cuba's banana plantations were a visible part of the island's agriculture in the early twentieth century, when fruit was grown for both local markets and export. Pictures like this one document the plants themselves, their broad leaves and clustered fruit, at a time when the island's farms were increasingly tied to foreign trade. The print is one of a numbered group of 1910s photographs in the Library of Congress collection, which makes it useful for seeing how the land was worked.
