A private in Company C of the 8th New York Cavalry, Walter G. Jones sits for this half-length portrait from 1861, and the record lists a Bible and bullets among its subjects, suggesting he was pictured with them as keepsakes or emblems of his service. Early in the war, studio portraits of volunteers like this one were often sold to families and to a public eager for images of the men going to the front. The print was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a New York firm, and the copy held by the Library of Congress was made in 1961 from an unidentified source.
