Few posters on this board pair a 1606 Jacobean satire with a Depression-era relief program, but this one does. Ben Jonson's comedy about a Venetian fox who feigns illness to lure fortune-seekers was staged in California in 1936 under the Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that gave out-of-work actors, designers and stagehands paid work. Printed by silkscreen, a method the WPA poster units used to make bold, inexpensive color announcements, the piece shows how the project advertised its productions to the public.
