The print's captions make bold claims: the largest dry goods district in the world, covering 135 acres, with 4,500 firms and $800,000,000 in capital. Issued around 1886 by J.J. Fogerty of New York, it shows a Broadway street scene with carts and a horse railroad, the traffic that moved goods through lower Manhattan's wholesale trade. Dry goods, meaning textiles, clothing and notions, were the core of that business, and the concentration of wholesalers helped make New York the country's leading center for ready-made clothing. The print's later inclusion in an exhibition on the garment industry and American Jewry reflects the trade's importance to the city's immigrant communities.
