Few street scenes from the 1890s capture the commercial energy of Manhattan as directly as this stereograph of the dry goods district along Broadway. Taken around 1892 and issued as a stereo card by the firm Strohmeyer & Wyman, it was made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional depth. The caption card's subject tags point to horse-drawn traffic and street railways, both essential to the city's streets before electric trolleys and motor vehicles took over. Dry goods houses, which sold cloth, notions and ready-made clothing, clustered in this part of lower Manhattan, so the image records the busy wholesale trade that once defined the avenue.
