This silkscreen poster takes its subject from the old English tale of Jack, who trades a cow for magic beans and climbs a beanstalk into the sky, a story that has long been a staple of children's reading. It was produced in 1936 under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists during the Great Depression and commissioned posters to publicize community events, including children's theater and library programs. The poster's bold flat color reflects the silkscreen method, which the project's artists adapted for inexpensive, eye-catching public notices. A date stamp on the back, from 1941, shows the sheet was still being filed and handled several years after it was printed.
