The record names John Ross, who was born in 1790 and served as principal chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828 until his death in 1866. This lithograph was drawn, printed, and colored at a Philadelphia establishment and published around 1843 by Daniel Rice and James G. Clark, a period when Ross was leading the Cherokee resistance to removal from their homeland in the Southeast. Ross had also fought alongside Andrew Jackson's forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814, the battle this park commemorates.
