Few portraits of the period were printed in color by hand, and this lithograph shows Andrew Jackson in the early years of his presidency. It reproduces a painting by William J. Hubard, and A. Newsam drew the image on stone before Lehman & Duval printed it in Philadelphia around 1830. Lithography made portraits like this affordable, spreading the likeness of a man whose reputation rested partly on his campaigns, including the 1814 victory at Horseshoe Bend during the Creek War. The watercolor tinting, added by hand to each copy, means that no two surviving impressions are exactly alike.
