Few places in the Creek War carry as much weight as the Hickory Grounds, a Muscogee ceremonial center on the Tallapoosa River that became a focal point of Andrew Jackson's campaign. Here Jackson is shown with the Tennessee militia he led into the Creek country in 1813 and 1814. The war it belonged to ended with the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in March 1814, now preserved at the national military park in Alabama. The picture is a useful reminder that Jackson's later fame was built on campaigns that devastated Native communities and set the stage for large Creek land cessions.
