This color chromolithograph, dated around 1896, presents Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, who died in 1845, in the saturated tones that made the process popular with publishers. Jackson's military reputation rests largely on his victory at Horseshoe Bend in Alabama in March 1814, where his forces defeated Creek Red Stick warriors, a battle now commemorated at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park. Chromolithography layered several stone or metal plates to build up color, which made it an affordable way to put patriotic portraits in homes and schools. The copyright notation on the print shows it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office for publication.
