Shown nearly in profile and leaning against a pillow, Andrew Jackson appears here near the end of his life. This plate is a copy daguerreotype, probably made from an original by Edward Anthony, and it dates from between 1844 and 1845, when Jackson was living in retirement at his Tennessee home, the Hermitage. Mathew Brady's studio produced the image, and its gold toning and trimmed corners are worth noticing, as is the pencil inscription naming the sitter. Jackson had led American forces at Horseshoe Bend in 1814, the battle this park commemorates.
