Printed and hand-colored at I.T. Bowen's Philadelphia lithographic shop and issued by F.W. Greenough around 1838, this portrait shows John Ridge, a Cherokee writer and political leader. Ridge spent part of the late 1830s in eastern cities arguing for his people while removal was under way. He had signed the 1835 Treaty of New Echota, which led to the Cherokee being forced west, and he was killed in 1839 in Indian Territory by Cherokee opponents of that treaty. His father, Major Ridge, fought alongside Andrew Jackson at Horseshoe Bend in 1814, the battle this park commemorates.
