A handshake is the whole argument of this poster: a soldier already at the front reaches out to the civilian who has not yet enlisted. The caption, "Your pal in the trenches is waiting to shake hands with you," frames recruitment as friendship and loyalty rather than duty. Dublin printer James Walker produced it in 1915, when Britain still depended on volunteers and recruiters in Ireland were working to fill new units such as the 10th (Irish) Division. The poster shows the personal pressure placed on Irish men to join up as casualties were mounting.
