The poster's text sets it apart from other health posters of the period: it names three recognized treatments for cancer, X-ray, radium, and surgery, and then tells viewers to consult a doctor. It was produced in 1936 under the Federal theater Project in New York, part of the Works Progress Administration's broader effort to put art and public information to work during the Depression. Public health campaigns of the 1930s often tried to counter myths and quack remedies by pointing people toward established medical care, and this poster follows that approach. Its silkscreen color and simple lettering were typical of WPA poster work, which was designed to be eye-catching and easy to read from a distance.
