Stop cancer now" is the blunt message on this 1936 poster, which warns that "delay reduces the chance for recovery." It was produced under the WPA's poster program for the U.S. Public Health Service, working with the American Society for the Control of Cancer, and the Federal theater Project in New York is listed as a sponsor. Silkscreen let the WPA print bold, flat color in large runs, so public health messages could reach clinics, post offices, and public buildings cheaply. The campaign reflects a 1930s push to get Americans to seek early diagnosis, when cancer was often discovered too late for effective treatment.
