The slogan printed across this poster, "Early is the watchword for cancer control," states its message plainly: detect and treat cancer at the first sign. Produced in silkscreen in 1936 under the Works Progress Administration's poster program, it was one of many bold, flat-color designs the WPA made to carry public health messages into clinics and public spaces. The campaign was a joint effort of the U.S. Public Health Service and the American Society for the Control of Cancer, a private group founded in 1913 to spread cancer education. The record also tags the design with roosters, a reminder that these posters often used striking imagery to make a medical warning easy to remember.
