Early is the watchword for cancer control" leads this 1936 silkscreen poster, and the design includes a rooster, an unusual figure for a health message. The poster was produced under the Works Progress Administration and credits the U.S. Public Health Service, reflecting a 1930s federal push to get the public to seek early diagnosis and treatment. Its promise that early action will save lives addressed a period when cancer was widely feared and many patients came to doctors too late for effective care. A date stamp on the back, September 1938, shows the print was still in circulation two years after its initial release.
