A steamship named the *Nubia*, operated by the British and African Steam Navigation Company, sails up the Gambia River in West Africa in this photograph from about 1905. The company's vessels carried passengers, mail and trade goods along the African coast, and the Gambia was a busy route for exporting groundnuts (peanuts) and other goods from the river's interior. The print was registered for copyright under the name of Burr McIntosh, an American actor and traveling lecturer who photographed his journeys, so it may well capture the view of a passenger on a voyage rather than a posed scene.
