Seen from behind, Roosevelt and a companion ride with guns slung across their saddles, so the picture shows the hunting party on the move rather than posed for a portrait. The slide dates from the years after his 1909 to 1910 African expedition, which he undertook after leaving the presidency to collect specimens for the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History. Lantern slides like this one were projected at lectures and club meetings, where a speaker narrated the journey across British East Africa for audiences who could not make the trip themselves.
