A color lithograph advertising the July issue of Harper's, printed in 1892, shows how publishers used the new poster style of the 1890s to sell periodicals. Harper & Brothers, the New York firm behind several of the best-known American magazines of the day, issued posters like this to catch the eye of passersby and bookstall customers. The print's modest size, about 40 by 31 centimeters, suggests it was meant for display in shop windows or on walls rather than on large street hoardings. Its placement under a patriotic heading fits the month, since July brought the Fourth of July holiday and the start of the summer reading season.
