This panorama, stitched from two glass negatives, shows the Singer Tower rising behind the City Investing Building on the left, with the Hudson Terminal complex at the center of the right-hand frame. Those three towers marked the rapid vertical growth of lower Manhattan in the years before 1915, when steel framing and electric elevators made office blocks taller than anyone had built before. The Singer Tower, finished in 1908, was for a time the tallest building in the world, and the Hudson Terminal served the railway tunnels that linked Manhattan to New Jersey. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the image, sold views like this to travelers and to businesses eager to show off a modern American city.
