Joseph Keppler's color lithograph "An Unexpected Blow" ran as a two-page spread in *Puck* on March 10, 1880, and it names both Ulysses S. Grant and Senator James Donald Cameron of Pennsylvania as its subjects. In early 1880 Grant was seeking the Republican presidential nomination for a third term, and Cameron was a leading figure in the Stalwart faction that backed him. The cartoon belongs to a stream of satirical imagery *Puck* produced that year, when the nomination fight was still open. Keppler, a Vienna-born illustrator, made *Puck* one of the most influential humor magazines of the period, and its full-color political cartoons are still prized for their detail.
