The title, *Symboles de la liberté*, translates as "Symbols of Liberty," and it places the work squarely in the French wartime effort of 1914. That year, France entered the First World War, and the republic leaned heavily on emblems such as Marianne, the tricolor, and the Phrygian cap to present the fight as a defense of civic freedom against the German Empire. Images like this one were produced to rally civilians, support recruitment and war bonds, and carry a patriotic message to a broad public. Look closely at which symbols are chosen and how they are arranged, since such choices reveal what the war's backers wanted their audience to feel about the cause.
