The poster's caption, "Pegasus at work for the Allies," casts the winged horse of myth as a flying ambulance, linking poetry with wartime rescue work. A handwritten inscription records that Robert Underwood Johnson, chairman of the American Lovers of Italy committee, gave this copy to the Library of Congress in honor of the victims of the Lusitania, the passenger liner sunk by a German submarine in 1915 with many Americans among the dead. The pairing shows how American sympathy for the Allies was being organized in 1917, just as the United States was entering the war.
