Enrolling for service" is the message across this 1919 color lithograph, which invites American children to join the Junior Red Cross. The sheet was printed in Philadelphia by Ketterlinus, and A.M. Upjohn's design shows children in the dress of the day. The Junior Red Cross began in schools in 1917, during the First World War, when pupils knitted, sewed and gathered supplies for relief work. Recruiting posters like this one carried the program into the postwar years, when it remained active in classrooms across the country.
