Titled "Junior Red Cross Comrades all," this 1919 color poster by Karl E. Johnson addresses young people as fellow volunteers rather than as soldiers or adults. The American Junior Red Cross grew out of the wartime Red Cross, which began enrolling schoolchildren in 1917 to knit, sew, and make bandages for military hospitals and relief work. Posters like this one, reproduced as halftone prints, carried the group's message of service into classrooms after the armistice, when its focus was broadening toward child health and welfare.
