This poster stands out for its bilingual text, printed in English and Chinese beside the American and Chinese flags, which suggests the American Red Cross was reaching out across language lines during the First World War. Its slogan calls the Red Cross the "mother of all nations," and a nurse in the design links that humanitarian ideal to wartime care. The Red Cross had been founded in Geneva in 1863, and by the war's end its American branch was recruiting volunteers and raising relief funds at home and overseas. Posters like this one were a major tool in those campaigns.
