What sets this poster apart is its Spanish-language text, which calls the Red Cross "Madre de todas las naciones," or mother of all nations, and places the American and Bolivian flags beside it. The design shows the American Red Cross reaching out to Spanish-speaking audiences during the war, when it sought support well beyond the United States. The red cross emblem reverses the colors of the Swiss flag, a tribute to Geneva, where the organization was founded in 1863. The nurses pictured alongside the flags point to the medical care the Red Cross provided to soldiers and civilians during the conflict.
