What sets this poster apart is its Spanish text, which calls the Red Cross "Madre de todas las naciones," or "mother of all nations," and places the flags of the United States and Ecuador beside the emblem. This color lithograph dates from between 1914 and 1918, when the American Red Cross was seeking public support for war relief at home and abroad. The red cross on a white field reverses the Swiss flag and was adopted under the 1864 Geneva Convention. The poster's pairing of national flags with a humanitarian symbol framed wartime medical aid as a shared international cause.
