The poster's Portuguese title, roughly "Symbols of Liberty and Humanity," calls the Red Cross the "mother of all nations," and its subjects pair American and Brazilian flags with nurses. That combination ties the American Red Cross's wartime medical work to Brazil, which declared war on Germany in October 1917 and sent a medical mission to Europe. Posters like this one used the nurse and the flag to present humanitarian relief as a shared cause among the Allies. The Portuguese text also shows the Red Cross's appeal beyond English-speaking audiences during the war.
