This Spanish-language poster, titled "Emblemas de la libertad y de la humanidad" ("Emblems of liberty and humanity"), presents the Red Cross as a shared symbol that calls itself "Madre de todas las naciones," or "Mother of all nations." Its subjects include the American and Bolivian flags and nurses, which suggests it was aimed at audiences across the Americas rather than only at English-speaking Americans. The American Red Cross expanded sharply after the United States entered the war in 1917, and posters like this helped recruit volunteers and raise money. The red cross on a white field is the reversed Swiss flag, chosen in the Geneva Convention of 1864 to mark neutral care for the wounded.
